Abstract

The legacies of slavery and colonialism are diverse. They include institutionalized racism, racialized poverty, the social marginalization of racialized peoples, a neoliberal economic system that has facilitated the expansion of human trafficking, and, of course, the imposition of a system of imperialism on the former colonies of France (and other European countries). The first step towards dismantling these systematic social and economic injustices must be the writing of a version of history that destabilizes the problematic hegemonic narratives that continue to thrive in the twenty-first century.
