Abstract
Based on the results of the census ofpopulation reports for 1870,1900 and 1910,
this study ofBarre (VT) shows the progress and transformation ofthe city as its growth is
sustained by the exploitation of granit. The case of Barre, which seems exceptional for
Vermont, offers interesting perspectives on the study of small town industrialization
centered on a single industry which employed a majority ofqualified immigrant workers
who were relatively weil paid and tended to join the unions. Quarrying was also an
industry that made Little roomfor women and children.
This research note mainly draws a statistical balance-sheet ofthe first results ofthe
investigation ofthe authors who eventually count on giving a more complete picture ofthe
social evolution of the community ofBarre between 1870 and 1940.
