Abstract
Based on a variety of sources, including the archives of the Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur,
the author examines the circumstances of unwed mothers at the Miséricorde Hospital in
Quebec City from 1874 to 1972. The article explains, among other things, the social
origins of unwed motherhood, and traces the development of the rehabilitative measures
in use at this institution.
